As a sequel to King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla vs. Kong will be released in 2021.
Godzilla vs. Kong has eventually been released after being delayed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and ultimately May 21, 2021. It will be released in the United States on March 31, 2021. The film was also accessible on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.
The film is directed by Adam Wingard, produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers with the screenplay written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, from a story by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty and Shields also wrote King of the Monsters. Godzilla vs. Kong begins five years after King of the Monsters, and sees Godzilla and Kong undergoing a titanic battle in the wake of Ghidorah's rampage.
A dramatic confrontation between fabled rivals Godzilla and Kong is the focus of "Godzilla vs. Kong" Along on the adventure is Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has built an unbreakable bond. But they find themselves in the path of an infuriated Godzilla, wreaking havoc throughout the globe. It is simply the beginning of the enigma that lurks deep below the Earth's core.
Meanwhile, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their hunt for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is first skeptical, since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tube. He ultimately accepts when Walter explains that Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.
To help guide them to the Hollow Earth, Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with his idea of using Kong as their navigator to lead them to the energy source since Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Though Ilene declines at first as she explains that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she finally accepts after being convinced by Nathan that they need to undertake this mission in order to stop Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home.
In the wake of realizing that Kong can't live in the cold weather and that they can't return him to Skull Island, Nathan inquires of Ilene, who instructs Jia to ask Kong whether he believes there are others like him in the tunnel, and the Titan enters the tunnel with the teams following him.
They come face to face with Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla controlled by Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Ren Serizawa, who is the son of the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa. Mechagodzilla's Titan-fighting talents are put to the test when Walter summons a massive adult Skullcrawler called "Number 10" into the area to test Mechagodzilla's Titan-fighting abilities. Mechagodzilla captures the Skullcrawler as it gets close to Madison, Josh, and Bernie and restrains it before cleaving it in half with a massive red energy beam as it approaches them. As a consequence of the power supply's limitations, the mecha shuts off immediately after starting.
Walter then reveals his intention to capture the Hollow Earth's energy in order to overcome Mechagodzilla's constraints. Madison then knows why Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species. While searching for an exit, Madison and the others come across a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been transformed into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla via radio waves. Apex acquired the head from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla five years ago during his battle with Ghidorah.
There, Godzilla finds his way into the heart of the city and, detecting Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, uses his atomic breath to bore a tunnel through the environment, collapsing the temple. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team attempt to flee in their HEAV, but Kong grabs it on their way out and, despite Maia's attempts to shoot him in order to escape, instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peering inside to ensure Jia, Ilene, and Nathan are not inside, killing Maia and her personnel.
When Godzilla issues his challenge, Kong accepts it and starts traveling to Hong Kong with his axe, with Ilene, Nathan, and Jia trailing behind in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. After a rematch with Godzilla in Hong Kong, Kong is able to get the upper hand and jam his axe down Godzilla's throat, thereby preventing him from unleashing his atomic breath once again. Kong uses his axe to stab Godzilla in the leg, but Godzilla pulls the axe from of Kong's grasp and throws it away. Following his recovery, Kong attacks Godzilla with his axe, generating an explosion that forces the two Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had won the second round of the fight against Godzilla, which is incorrect.
Walter instructs Ren to send Mechagodzilla back to Apex headquarters to kill Godzilla. Despite Ren's cautions not to utilize the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, the mecha is activated and begins its mission. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are also brought to Walter by the security officers. Madison accuses Walter of taking responsibility for allowing mankind to fight Godzilla and the Titans, despite Walter's denials.
While Josh and Bernie try unsuccessfully to deactivate the rampaging robot remotely and Madison tries to summon Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle. At one point, both fire their energy beams at each other, which lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to win, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and thrash Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices his pulse diminishing. Ilene explains that they are unable to produce a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, remembering Maia's earlier statement about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.
The two Titans join forces to turn the tide, but the robot is superior to them. Kong takes aim at Mechagodzilla with his axe, but his weapon has lost its charge, and the robot attempts to impale Kong with its tail drill, but Kong escapes. Bernie, realizing that he and the others can't help Kong or Godzilla, pulls out a flask of liquor and advises that they all drink. Josh, however, has an epiphany and grabs Bernie's flask, pouring the contents all over Mechagodzilla's control panel, prompting Mechagodzilla to halt and Godzilla and Kong to seize control.
Kong sees Godzilla holding his axe and uses his atomic breath to accelerate it, allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb by limb and remove its head before holding up his trophy and relaxing.
According to the site's summary of audience evaluations, "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Indeed, although critics largely applauded the film's monster brawling aspect, others were disappointed by the film's "half-baked" human portion. The picture was credited with reversing a box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 outbreak, earning an estimated $48.5 million dollars in the United States by Sunday morning of the five-day weekend release period. WarnerMedia could not provide specific data for the film's reception on HBO Max, but did claim that it was a picture that people saw several times and that it had a greater viewing viewership than any series or feature published on the service since its inception. The picture also grossed a staggering amount of money in overseas markets, grossing an extra $236 million in non-U.S. countries.
Since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla and King Kong have not appeared in a film together.
Terry Rossio's first Godzilla feature, after his unproduced script for the unmade 1994 picture, is released in this year.
Kyle Chandler has appeared in two films based on King Kong, the first being Peter Jackson's 2005 adaptation.
King Kong, Godzilla, and Godzilla Vs. Kong all have Chandler in their casts. This makes him the only actor to appear in a King Kong, a Godzilla, and an inter-King Kong crossover film all at once!
Kong, like Godzilla, jumps from ship to ship in order to avoid an angel.
When it comes to the location where Mechagodzilla is housed, it shares a striking similarity to the Central Dogma.
